What is your education story?
I was born and raised in New Rochelle, NY and received my early education there. My compassion for others led me to earn an AAS Degree in Mortuary from the State University of New York at Farmingdale. I continue to learn daily through my many life experiences.
If kids aren’t reading on grade level by third grade, research is clear that they’re less likely to graduate.
75% of third-graders in Bridgeport aren’t reading on grade level. What will you do to change this if elected?
We need to have a stronger focus on early childhood education...if we can ensure that all of 3 and 4 years olds are introduced to phonics then they will have a better chance of being better readers, studies shown that they have a better chance at being successful when given more complex reading text. Investment early pays off in the future.
Should Bridgeport receive increased education funding from the state? Why or why not?
Yes, if they receive the increased funding then it levels the playing field and provides an opportunity and resources for communities that need it. So when we talk about equity in education we say that we are breaking down the barriers that prohibit kids from living equitable lives because of the resources that are not afforded to them. The additional funding would be a start in removing the barriers that stands between our children.
Why do you believe Bridgeport residents should vote for you?
I believe Bridgeport residents should vote for me because I care about Bridgeport’s children and families. They are the backbone of our City. I have dedicated the last 20 years of my life to public service, through my work on the council and on the Board of Education.
