What is your education story?

I came to the United States 25 years ago to pursue education. I have an undergraduate engineering degree from the University of Delhi in India, an MBA from the University of Texas, and an MPA from Harvard University.

If kids aren’t reading on grade level by third grade, research is clear that they’re less likely to graduate.
75% of third-graders in Bridgeport aren’t reading on grade level. What will you do to change this if elected?

We need to identify and address the structural factors which are causing this. We need to find solutions to each of these by:

  • promoting schools that are able to handle difficult educational situations,

  • provide programs that can provide extra support to students and

  • provide extra training to teachers that need it.

Should Bridgeport receive increased education funding from the state? Why or why not?

We need to provide additional funding to performing schools and programs that provide satisfactory outcomes. For schools that are challenged, funding should be contingent after helping identify the resources that are required to reform these programs/schools.

Why do you believe Bridgeport residents should vote for you?

I understand through personal experience how important education is for success in life. Bridgeport residents should vote for me because I will make it a priority to fight for education and development in Bridgeport and use all my skills to address this multi-decade problem of poor educational outcomes. I have the skills, the intellect and the drive to find solutions and deliver.

What is your education story?

I was born in Peru and moved to the United States where I attended public schools and learned the value of education. I completed undergraduate studies at Harvard University, and was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University where I earned a Masters degree In latin American Studies. I was lucky enough to have involved parents, well-funded schools and excellent teachers at every stage, and am committed to all children having those same opportunities.

Early childhood education is vital. I have previously introduced the Total Learning Act and the Supporting Early Learning Act. The Total Learning Act creates a grant program to implement early learning programs in high-need communities for children under 10. The grants would encourage initiatives that focus on multimodal teaching, intensive parental involvement, and wraparound social services. Grants could be used to extend school hours and days, staff development, comprehensive child and family support services.

Should Bridgeport receive increased education funding from the state? Why or why not?

Yes, Bridgeport has the most children with the most schools. The schools and educators in Bridgeport are underfunded, with most of the school buildings needing renovations and updates. For our kids to succeed, they need the best materials, literature, technology and programs available to them. The CT legislature passed a new Education Cost Sharing formula that will be phased-in during FY19. This should result in an increase in state education funding for Bridgeport.

Why do you believe Bridgeport residents should vote for you?

During my five terms representing Connecticut’s 4thDistrict, including Bridgeport, in Congress I’ve worked tirelessly to represent their interests in Washington. I secured an $11 million grant to revive Bridgeport Steelpoint Harbor, bringing in new businesses, visitors and creating jobs, worked with local officials to rebuild the Congress Street bridge and helped Bridgeport residents with healthcare and local issues. For Bridgeport, I hold regular meetings with local constituents, attend community events and support community activities.
